چکیده

The rules for unification in a simple syntactic theory, using Kirchner’s mutation [15, 16] do not terminate in the case of associativecommutative theories. We show that in the case of a linear equation, these rules terminate, yielding a complete set of solved forms, each variable introduced by the unifiers corresponding to a (trivial) minimal solution of the (trivial) Diophantine equation where all coefficients are 1. A nonlinear problem can be first treated as a linear one, that is considering two occurrences of a same variable as two different variables. After this step, one has to solve the equations between the different values that have been obtained for the different occurrences of a same variable. We show that one can restrict the search of the solutions of these latter equations to linear substitutions. This result is based on the analysis of how the minimal solutions of a linear Diophantine equation can be built-up using the solutions of the trivial Diophantine equation associated with the linearized AC-equation. This provides a new AC-unification algorithm which does not make an explicit use of the solving of linear Diophantine equations.

Frequency-based Segregation of Syntactic and Semantic Unification during Online Sentence Level Language Comprehension

During sentence level language comprehension, semantic and syntactic unification are functionally distinct operations. Nevertheless, both recruit roughly the same brain areas (spatially overlapping networks in the left frontotemporal cortex) and happen at the same time (in the first few hundred milliseconds after word onset). We tested the hypothesis that semantic and syntactic unification are ...

A Strategy for the Syntactic Parsing of Corpora: from Constraint Grammar Output to Unification-based Processing

This paper presents a strategy for syntactic analysis based on the combination of two different parsing techniques: lexical syntactic tagging and phrase structure syntactic parsing. The basic proposal is to take advantage of the good results on lexical syntactic tagging to improve the whole performance of unification-based parsing. The syntactic functions attached to every word by the lexical s...

Associative-commutative rewriting via flattening

AC-rewriting is simulated by using flattened terms, flattened rewrite rules, extensions and specializations with respect to the AC-operators, therefore allowing us to reduce AC-pattern matching and AC-unification to permutative matching and permutative unification respectively.

Unification, competition and optimality in signed languages: aspects of the syntax of American Sign Language (ASL)

Major advances have been made in recent years with respect to our understanding of the syntactic organization of signed languages. However, most of the syntactic research has been carried out within derivational syntactic frameworks. Certain issues have been left unaddressed because such frameworks do not readily lend themselves to explanatory solutions. This paper will begin with a brief intro...

Syntactic Unification as a Geometric Operation in Free Modules over certain Rings

We have shown elsewhere how to introduce a concept of syntactic unification when terms are taken as the elements in a free module and established the link between both unification concepts showing that, under certain reasonable hypotheses, they are completely equivalent. Here we show how syntactic unification of terms may be viewed as the intersection of certain subsets in a free module, which ...
